About us
While one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally each year, the ZeroW project is launching to help the transition of current food systems towards halving Food Loss & Waste (FLW) by 2030 and reaching a near-zero level by 2050. The project is funded by The European Union under Grant Agreement no. 101036388. ZeroW is driving innovations for zero food waste by: - Developing data-driven applications to reduce Food Loss & Waste throughout the supply chain from pre-harvest, production, processing, wholesale & retail to consumption. - Creating systemic innovation through 9 living labs across the EU. - Making policy recommendations for the EU.

Happy to share that the first paper of my PhD project got published! Our research focuses on the issue of household food waste. In this paper, we show that planning helps to generate healthy, affordable meal plans with zero waste. On January 24th our partner ASINCAR organized a workshop where different digital solutions for improving the efficiency and the control of food processing operations were presented. In this context, ASINCAR showed different applications based on the use of portable NIR (Near Infrarred Spectroscopy) that are currently under development, including the ZeroW project where is looking for a portable, easy to use device for the control of food quality critical points in a poultry factory. +50 people participated in the workshop with representation of food industries, ICT companies and relevant regional stakeholders.

Check out this exciting project aiming to turn retail food waste into high-value micro-algae feed - using a pre-treatment process that turns retail waste into high-value micro-algae feed. By using a drying machine to create a dehydrated powder, this waste can be used to supplement microalgae production, which has potential applications in biopolymers and cosmetic production. Not only is this a circular economy approach, but it also has the potential to cover the corresponding costs and ensure economic feasibility. With collaboration from MC Sonae, Universidade do Minho and Allmicroalgae a cohesive process plan is being developed. Let's work towards a circular economy and reduce global food waste!
